"Online Azerbaijan"

The “Online Azerbaijan” project was implemented to improve people's well-being by providing high-speed Internet access for the population and organizations in the most remote areas of the country, as well as innovative solutions that facilitate their use.

The project, based on the public-private partnership model, was implemented by “Aztelekom” LLC, “Baku Telephone Communication” LLC, “Azeronline LTD” and “Smart Systems Technology” companies.

Although the work on modern broadband solutions using GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) technology began in 2017, it has been implemented on a large scale, including in the regions, since 2021.

During the “Online Azerbaijan” project, the existing ADSL equipment was replaced with GPON equipment operating on the modern IMS platform, the old copper backbone cable infrastructure was replaced with optical cables, and an optical distribution network was established.

This technology significantly improves the quality of Internet service, as well as allows for the provision of IPTV and other additional services. GPON technology, which is considered the latest trend in optical cable technology, technically allows for the provision of high-speed internet up to 1 gigabit/s. This optical technology is resistant to natural deformation and delivers information (signal) to the address in the fastest way.

The goal of the “Online Azerbaijan” project was to provide both businesses and households in all areas of the country with high-speed, stable broadband internet through modern technologies. Over the past 4 years, the number of households with access to fixed broadband, high-speed internet in the country has increased 13 times to approximately 3 million, as a result of which the country’s fixed broadband internet coverage has been fully provided. This project, in addition to improving the internet infrastructure, was one of the strategic steps shaping the country’s digital future.

The project was implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport within the framework of the “Strategic Roadmap for the Development of Telecommunications and Information Technologies”. Over the past two years, the average annual speed of broadband Internet in the country has increased by 1.4 times, and according to data as of January 2024, this indicator exceeded 66 Mbit/s.

The work carried out within the framework of the project has also been highly appreciated internationally. Thus, within the framework of the world's most prestigious mobile technologies exhibition, “Mobile World Congress (MWC)”, “Aztelekom” LLC was awarded the “Fastest Fixed Network” award. This award was presented by “Ookla”®, a global leader in internet speed testing and analysis.
